Providing insight and ideas to help your organisation achieve its objectives
Providing insight and ideas to help your organisation achieve its objectives
My work encompasses public affairs, research and media relations. I take a 360-degree approach to meeting the client’s needs. Based in London and operating both in the UK and internationally, I have since April 2005 combined wide-ranging experience with a good pedigree of success.
Working closely with the client, I deliver a range of support, from high-quality one-off projects, through to providing integrated services on an ongoing basis.
I enjoy helping smaller organisations punch above their weight, as well as providing an outside perspective for larger organistions.
Flexible working methods and quality of delivery enable my clients to acquire the services of a highly experienced professional without the overheads of a large consultancy.
The success of this approach is shown by my having worked with several clients for over ten years.
Dealing with Government and regulatory processes is crucial to affecting decisions which could impact hugely on your company or organisation. But navigating the system remains challenging for those who are not used to engaging with it day-to-day. I can give strategic advice and assistance in building reputation and brand awareness, in the form of a one-off review or ongoing high-level support. This work can include training and/or strategy workshops. I have worked with several clients this way, advising on how to meet their many policy goals and suggesting additional tools and techniques to help achieve them.
I have experience in both overseeing and carrying out research projects, both qualitative and quantitative. In terms of conducting research, I am specifically experienced in qualitative surveys, interviewing high-level opinion leaders and producing reports and presentations on the key insights and trends.
I can provide interim support to run a public affairs operation or a small organisation, with particular experience in trade associations. Experience includes: Acting Managing Director of a creative industry trade body; paternity leave cover for the Executive Director of a broadcasting trade body; maternity leave cover for the public affairs director of a media trade organisation, during which I devised and carried out with the CEO a public affairs engagement programme following a relaunch.
Rebranding: I have advised on organisations' rebranding, with a focus on ensuring effectiveness for public affairs activity. I have led on rebranding a small trade association, from renaming the organisation through to stakeholder outreach and media coverage.
Publications: Working where necessary with an experienced graphic designer, I am experienced in producing well-written and designed strategic plans; manifestos; annual reports; stakeholder bulletins; and detailed responses to Government, Parliamentary and regulatory consultations.
I am highly experienced in working with boards and holding board positions. I am currently an Independent EOT Trustee for an entertainment/media company and have previously served as an executive or non-executive director on several boards, including: a licensing organisation distributing quarterly multi-million-pound sums; a Government-funded organisation distributing c£1m annually; a creative industry trade organisation; and a charity providing TV production training to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
I have good experience of chairing and speaking on panels and at conferences. I have also used my knowledge and contacts to produce conference sessions, including at events such as the Radio Festival, GovKnow and the Wales Screen Summit.
I have engaged with all levels of policymaking, bringing successful results and building organisational reputations. As an independent consultant I've provided effective long-term support for clients, often at CEO/Board level, to improve engagement and policy outcomes from UK government, Welsh government and local government. My career combines both in-house and consultancy experience, as well as private sector, not-for-profit and public sector.
Since becoming an independent consultant in April 2005 I have worked for: Asphalt Industry Alliance, Audio Content Fund, Audio Producers Events Ltd, BAA plc, Channel 4 TV Corporation, 4Radio, CoBA, Directors UK, GovKnow, Grayling Political Strategy, Hawthorn Consulting Grp, Hornsey Housing Trust, International Insights, International School of Communication, Munro & Forster, Oxus Gold plc, Phonepay Plus, Radio Independents Group/AudioUK, Road Users Alliance, Rondo Media, Sanofi Pasteur MSD, Teledwyr Annibynnol Cymru/Welsh Independent producers (TAC), World DAB and Yeti TV.
I have held many public affairs and communications roles: prior to April 2005 I was Director of Policy at TV and film trade association Pact, which during the time I was there successfully amended legislation to protect producers' intellectual property. Prior to this I was a senior consultant at Westminster Strategy and Political Context, delivering successful programmes for Microsoft; Eutelsat; Lincolnshire County Council; Roche Pharmaceuticals; and many others. Previous roles included: NHS health promotion campaigns; information/press work for a leading science policy think-tank; working with NGOs on public health issues.
I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, the professional association for communications consultants. I adhere to the CIPR's Code of Conduct and am included in its Register.
I do not use AI services such as ChatGPT in the production of work for clients. Every document produced for my clients is personally researched and written, applying over thirty-five years of experience, knowledge and insight.
I am the Independent Trustee for the TBI Media Employee Ownership Trust. I was formerly a Board Director for: Educational Recording Agency; Audio Content Fund; AudioUK; and Connections Communications Centre.
I am a member of the Royal Television Society.
“Tim helped us manage and communicate with external stakeholders on a high profile regulatory project at Channel 4. He did so very effectively and it was a pleasure to work with him.”
"Tim Wilson was able to fit smoothly into our corporate affairs team - he is quick, accurate, and experienced."
“We needed someone to organise a major relationship-building campaign for us with key politicians and civil servants. Tim planned and executed the whole thing with great flair and diligence, putting us well and truly on the map.”
“Tim’s work got our industry on the map with key policy audiences. He was instrumental in persuading the Government to finance the £1m-a-year Audio Content Fund, as well as increasing by 600% the BBC content available for competition from independent producers. He also led on rebranding our organisation to reflect the changing industry and, during the Covid-19 lockdowns, worked with Government to enable the continuation of audio production activity.”
“Tim researched, wrote and presented to our Board a comprehensive and intelligent strategy for engaging stakeholders and decision makers on some key policy proposals. He met the brief perfectly.”
